Business Hours
Banks, post offices, and public offices are generally open from 09:30 to 17:00 on weekdays but are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Most of the shops are open from 10:00 to 22:00 through the entire week.
Climate and Apparel
The month of September in Korea falls between summer and autumn. The average temperature is between 22¡ÆC and 26¡ÆC. Light long sleeved shirts or blouses, and short sleeved shirts are sufficient.
In the evenings, a light jacket would be advisable. A hat and comfortable shoes are recommended for some tours.
Foreign Exchange
Foreign currency and traveler's checks can be converted into Korean won at most banks and other authorized moneychangers. The exchange rate is subject to market fluctuations and is trading at approximately 943.9 Korean won per US dollar as Jan. 2008.
Credit Cards
Credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and JCB are accepted at major hotels, restaurants and shops.
Electricity Supply
Voltage in Korea is 220 V at 60 Hz.
Taxes
Value-Added Tax (VAT) is levied on most goods and services at a standard rate of 10% and is included in the retail price. In tourist hotels, this 10% tax applies to rooms, meals and other services and is included in the bill. Any product with this "Tax Free Shopping" sign will allow you to get a refund on VAT. You must depart the Republic of Korea within 3 months of the purchase.
Time Zone
The time zone is Greenwich Mean Time +9 hours.
Tipping
Tipping is not a traditional Korean custom. Generally, a 10% service charge is added to the bill at hotels and tipping is not expected. It is not necessary to tip a taxi driver unless participant is assisted with luggage or provided with extra service.
